As we get further into November, the canned food drive comes around. We all know it’s coming as we see the flyers around the school halls, attempting to try to encourage us to bring in as many cans as possible to help our class possibly win a pizza party.

With the topic of the canned food drive comes questions a few of us have. How long has this been going on? Has this changed as it has gone on? I decided to ask someone who helps work on it all, Mrs. Davenport.

The main goal of the canned food drive is to help bring in cans to help others. “We have been doing this for 30 years,” Mrs. Davenport reports, “while the Lion’s Den has been doing it for 50 years.” In recent years, the high school has gotten less involved in bringing in cans. The flyers are supposed to encourage students to bring in the cans.

Mrs. Davenport’s favorite posters from the previous years are the Walking Dead ones from a few years ago. The people that help design the flyers are Mrs. Lancaster and some of the Jr. High kids.  With the Jr. High and High School students participating, it is often a competition between them both. “Jr. High will bring in the most.” Mrs. Davenport concludes because of the fact that Jr. High has brought in the most cans for majority of the past years.  There are no goals that are set about how many cans that we need to bring in, so with no goals the possibilities of us helping the Lion’s Den are endless.

The total cans collected as of Wednesday, November 29 are as follows:

6th Grade – 73

7th Grade – 50

8th Grade – 20

Freshmen – 0

Sophomores – 0

Juniors – 80

Seniors – 0
