Two weeks ago, the varsity boys basketball team participated in the Gene Bergschneider Turkey Tournament, which took place in New Berlin. Teams that participated included the North Mac Panthers, Macon Meridian Hawks, LuHi Crusaders, New Berlin Pretzels, South County Vipers, and Lincolnwood Lancers.

The Vipers took three losses in the tournament to LuHi, North Mac, and Macon Meridian. They did have two wins in the tournament, one to the eventual champions, North Mac. Vipers coach, Dave Suits, said, “We beat a pretty good team with lots of weapons. The team had no other losses in the tournament and it was a solid showing for us.” The win versus Lincolnwood was on the opposite side of the spectrum. “We didn’t play as good, but we still ended up with the win. It’s still a good feeling for the team,” said Suits.

After their first big loss against Meridian, the team really cleaned up their act. They took care of the ball better and really adjusted their pace in the games after. Moving the ball seems to help the Vipers as they get more open looks while they do. “More physicality, more ball movement, and smarter shots,” said Bryce Rickert from a player perspective. “After we did that the games after changed.”

Some key players for the Vipers included Jackson Smith, Luke Schumacher, and Luke Bergschneider. Smith averaged fourteen points, seven rebounds, and three assists for the tournament. This showing garnered him an All-Tournament Team selection. Another key player was Joey McAfee, who Suits coined a “pleasant surprise.” He played good defense through the tournament and started in two games.

On Friday, November 30, the Vipers took on the Pretzels again after their loss to them earlier in the Turkey Tournament. After the loss, Suits was looking to change some things, including fewer turnovers, some new plays, and finishing in transition. The final score was 48-43.
