South County Track

A new season is rolling around for the Vipers’ track team. Last year, they took home the MSM conference championship for both the girls and boys team. This year both teams are looking to keep the streak going. They have lost several seniors who were important to the team, including Ellie Whalen and Cayden Sharp. Other team members decided to pursue other sports. However, there is a long list of freshmen joining, including Brayden Colwell, Cody Spencer, Logan Mahan, Trenton Sampson, and Emmy Treece.

One of the more notable freshmen additions is Brayden Colwell, who went to state last year for high jump and placed fourth. His seventh-grade year he placed eighth. Colwell has improved drastically in high jump over two years. “I improved my PR from 5 feet to 5’7 in eighth grade.” Even though high jump is Colwell’s favorite event, his favorite part of track is hanging out with his friends and people from Waverly. Colwell hopes to get better at high jump and his sprints. Last year he competed in the 100, 4×2, and 4×4 in addition to high jump.

The next addition to the team is first-year junior, Ashley Bergschneider. Ashley has never participated in track before; however, she competed in cross-country all through junior high. Currently she is holding her own at track practices, beating some of the best distance runners in the girls group. Though she is improving, she really doesn’t like running long distances.

These two newcomers and returning members to the high school team will help out due to the losses of seniors. Even with numbers down for the current season, they are still working hard to win and be competitive at track meets.
