On Sunday, January 26, 2020, Kobe Bryant and eight others were involved in a fatal helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. This tragic event left the whole sports world in shock–many fans and colleagues felt a deep sadness, especially the community of Los Angeles, California, where he spent his entire career. Many people close to Kobe have been speaking words of kindness about his life, and others have been at a loss for words.

Due to this tragic event, the NBA honored Kobe at the NBA All-Star Weekend. Team Lebron wore the number two on all of their jerseys and Team Giannis wore the number twenty-four. The number two honored Kobe’s daughter Gianna and twenty-four was the last worn number by Kobe. Fans are also signing a petition to make Kobe the new NBA logo. This petition has gained some traction in the last few weeks; in fact, over three million have signed it. After this, at the Golden State Warriors first home game in San Francisco, California, they handed out t-shirts with Kobe as the logo to all the fans. Fans also honored Kobe by creating a memorial at Staples Center on the day of and after his death.

The games that took place on Sunday honored Kobe as well. Many teams committed twenty-four-second shot clock violations and eight-second backcourt violations to honor him. The most astonishing characteristic about Kobe is how he is respected because it is mainly attributed to his “Mamba Mentality.” Kobe will also be remembered for more than basketball, including how he cared for his daughter Gianna, who he was spotted with at many basketball games, and how he produced an Oscar-winning short film entitled “Dear Basketball.” Kobe not only showed us how to work hard on the court, but also to succeed off of it. This is why Bryant is still going to leave a legacy–one that we can already see in the many young NBA players that were influenced by him.
