Play as a team, win as a team

The Viper volleyball team has been making headlines with their accomplishments this season, including their Meredosia tournament win, Coach Spencer’s 300th win, and their impressive record of 20-4. The girls have been spending a lot of time in and out of the gym, practices, eating team meals before away games, and even going to an Illini volleyball game together. Madi Springer noted that she enjoys spending time with the team and that they even go to get coffee together.

The team recently spent a week away at the Meredosia tournament. Their time was well spent because they managed to come back with some hardware. The varsity team placed first, and JV placed second. “South County has never won the varsity tournament, and we put three people on the all-tournament team, so it was a good conclusion,” Coach Spencer explained, clearly proud of her players. On the same Saturday that they won the tournament, Coach also managed to reach her 300th win. “It just so happened that it was a big coincidence that it was on the same day.”

“The experience was very exciting, we worked really well as a team, despite Maddie Mutch, and Madi Springer both being hurt,” Eva Smith stated. She enjoyed the win and was super proud to get Coach Spencer to her 300th win. “She’s been my coach for three years now, and she’s always there for me.”

The team is about halfway through the season, and they are hoping to head into the postseason on a winning streak. With their team’s potential this year they are all looking to go past regionals.
