First it was the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge, the Cinnamon Challenge, and now the Tide Pod Challenge. A trend picked up around early December last year called the Tide Pod Challenge. This challenge consist of people eating Tide Pods and posting their videos online. A Tide Pod is a colored liquid square laundry detergent packet that can be very dangerous if consumed.

Recently, YouTube decided to take down the videos because they were violating their policies. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission made a public warning to parents about the detergent packs years ago. The department said younger children would be attracted to the packets. Some stores are even locking the Tide Pod containers up to make it more difficult for children to purchase the item for the purposes of completing the challenge.

So far in 2018, as recorded by the American Association of Poison Control Centers, “at least 86 cases of intentional misuse of the laundry packets were reported among teenagers” (Pirani). The consumption of laundry pods is dangerous as they contain a large amount of chemical compounds, such as bleach or softener.

If consumed, first the pod will explode in your mouth, causing a lot of irritation and coughing. If you swallow the liquid detergent in the pod, it can cause burns to the stomach and esophagus. If you inhale the detergent while swallowing, it could cause major respiratory distress. It seems there is a rise is intentional misuse of Tide Pods, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, as there were only 53 cases reported in the entire year of 2017.
